With restoration efforts of network facilities in full swing, PLDT, Inc. and wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc have reconnected Cebu, Dinagat, Siargao, and Surigao using Smart satellite phones.

These enable vital communication links for local officials and response teams conducting rescue, relief and recovery in these badly-hit areas.

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia receives from Smart Group Corporate Communications VisMin Manager Marylou Gocotano a satellite phone donated by the telco to help in communications as part of disaster recovery in the wake of Typhoon Odette.

Surigao Congressman Francisco Jose Matugas II says the satellite phones will enable the Tawag Centers that will be set up in Siargao and Surigao, helping people call family and loved ones to let them know they’re safe.

Cebu Provincial Governor Gwen Garcia, Cebu Provincial Police Office Director PCol Engelbert Z. Soriano, and Rainer Riger received the satellite phone for use in Cebu and Dinagat Islands.

Libreng Tawag and Libreng Charging stations continue to serve the communication needs of residents of affected communities in Visayas and Mindanao.
